How to Do Aerobics

Written by Mystic on Thursday, February 07, 2008

A Few Pointers for How to

  • Warm up and cool down, always. They play an immensely large role in injury prevention. The warm up should include a combination of stretching, limbering and whole body exercises that get the muscles, heart and systems ready for the workload they are about to encounter. The cool down should aim at bringing your heart rate gradually back to normal, and should stretch and relax the muscles you have worked so hard. This is important as leaving the muscles in a contracted state instead of relaxing them could cause stiffness and even muscle cramps later.

  • If you're participating in an organized class, it's natural to feel a bit self- conscious when you begin. It helps to remember that everyone in your class, even your instructor, was once a first-timer. Focus on the positive. Enjoy the group energy and the music. Be proud of yourself for taking that first step! Remember, you are not in competition with anyone, except maybe the you of yesterday.

  • Keep track of your progress every 3- 4 weeks. Use a measure tape to do this.

The Difference

You'll notice the difference in just 4- 5 sessions. If you're doing it right, you'll begin seeing the resluts almost immediately. If you don't, then review the situation- you probably missed something. Notice when you're able to do 5 more of a set or routine than when you started.

You'll notice inch/ fat loss, and muscle definition where earlier there was none!

You're clothes will be looser, and family and friends will start commenting on how much slimmer you look!

Give yourself credit for the changes you're creating today!

What's on the Aerobic Menu?

  • Avoid wearing synthetic fabrics such spandex, Lycra and nylon, as they don't allow the skin to breathe. Cotton on the other hand, does. So, the heat build-up, which is a natural by- product of exercise, can easily be dissipated.

  • Many exercisers like the look and feel of leotards and tights, but any non-binding clothing that allows you to move freely is fine to wear.

  • Don't compromise on footwear. Get a good pair of sneakers with a thick sole for adequate cushioning. Your lower limbs need good support. Air-soled shoes are usually far more supportive and provide better cushioning than others.

How to Measure Obesity

Written by Mystic on Monday, January 28, 2008

Measurements

Several criteria have been suggested to measure obesity but a few simplified objective methods for its assessment are now widely acceptable worldwide A person is obese when a he or she is 20% above the recommended weight for his or her height and build. Another direct method for estimation of body fats include Densitometery which simply entails weighing under water and uses the basic principle that fat and other body tissues have different density, and hence the actual fat content can be calculated. Convenient methods used in clinics are as follows:

Skin fold thickness
Ordinary calipers can be used to measure skin fold thickness over the biceps, triceps or below the shoulder and standard charts are used to assess the degree of obesity.

Body mass index (BMI)
This is a quick, easy and reliable method. It uses the ratio of weight in kgs divided by the square of height in meters, i.e., W/H2 for example for someone weighing 70 kgs. and a height of 175 cms. Body Mass Index (BMI) will be 70/(1.75)2 = 23. BMI of 25 is taken as upper limit of normal, and a span of 25-29.9 as overweight. Values above 30 is obese. In terms of disease and mortality, scientists have categorized BMI under four categories.

BMI Relative Index
25-30 LOW
30-35 MODERATE
35-40 HIGH
40 VERY HIGH

Waist/hip-ratios
Ratio of the waist measured at the narrowest part between the rib cage and hips divided by measurement of hips at the widest part determines a simple but useful ratio. Scientists have enough evidence that a ratio higher than 1.0 for men and 0.9 for women are associated with high risks of getting diabetes and cardiovascular morbidity.

Standard tables
Standard tables of height and weight in correlation to the risk of mortality at different ages are convenient. These are derived from various sources such as life insurance data and nationwide disease prevalence. However they have several limitations as they take into account only a cross sections of the population.

The Most useful Criteria
For a quick assessment of obesity and related risk, the BMI and waist/hip ratio are the best since enough data is now available nationwide and worldwide.

Obesity In America - Measuring Obesity

Obese Child

Written by Mystic on Monday, January 28, 2008

When obesity strikes early!

Are your wrong eating habits making your child obese? Or is he chubby due to some other reason. Read on to know the factors making your child overweight.

Factors leading to childhood obesity
Obesity in children is when you suspect the weight is 20 per cent more than the ideal body weight. It is more of a social problem than a medical problem. Our society calls such children “cute”, “chubby” and “sweet little ones”; hence a fat child is more accepted. Causes of childhood include the following:

  • Genetic factors-80 per cent of children are obese if both parents are fat.
  • Social factors-Wrong eating habits of the adults and their lifestyle.
  • Media influence-Advertisements luring the children for chocolates, 2-minute noodles, snack foods.
  • Family tensions-A lonely and defected child finds solace in overeating.
  • Medical problems-like diabetes, thyroid problem and certain drugs like steroids.
  • Insufficient exercise-spending more time in front of the T.V.

Prevention of obesity in children
Nutrition and diet - A diet of complex carbohydrates such as potatoes and pasta, as well as chicken, fish and plenty of vegetables. The main meal of the child should be in the middle of the day when he can burn off more calories. Thus calorie restriction is avoided.
Replace daily consumption of soft drinks with 4-5 glasses of water/juice/milk (toned). Thus fats and sugars should also be substituted for proteins, minerals and vitamins and a high fibre diet. “Pay attention to quality and not to quantity”.

  • Avoid sedentary activities such as watching television and get the child into a regular exercise programme or routine.
  • Avoid using food as reward to the children.
  • Reduce family tension.
  • Change of attitudes.

How to Get in Shape

Written by Mystic on Thursday, January 24, 2008

Exercises! Oh! I've been thinking of taking them up to get into shape. But with my busy schedule where do I get the time to stick to them. On the top of it they are so cumbersome that somehow I don't have the inclination to work them out. If these excuses describe you, don't worry! Because in this article we'll give you some exercises that you'll love to do. And the added bonus is that they'll not only help you lose those extra pounds but will provide you with strength, flexibility and endurance. Who wouldn't want that? And you bet that they are good for your heart too!

Think it's too good to be true? Just read on

For Strength, Flexibility and Endurance

Gardening: Well, this exercise is just perfect to get to the 'root' of fitness. And on the plus side you'll beautify your garden too. So try weeding, digging and raking, it's the most wonderful way to communicate with Mother Nature- and in the process if you turn healthy, so much the better!

You must be wondering how gardening can do you good. Well, described as a light exercise by fitness experts, gardening makes a serious contribution to your overall activity level. If you're middle-aged, this moderate leisure time physical activity will make you less prone to heart disease. And it's a fun way to burn those extra calories! However, just remember that you need atleast three gardening sessions every week to reap maximum benefits of this wonderful activity!

Here's a word of caution! If you're planning to take up gardening as an exercise, just make sure to keep a cushion under your knees when you kneel. Keep your back straight and don't sit on your knees. Make it a point to stand up and stretch your legs every 10 minutes or so. Also bend at the knees and hip when picking up tools, bag of soil (don't overload it) and other heavy objects.

Stair Climbing: This is an activity that can fit into almost everybody's day-to-day life. And this is the best and the most practical way to become active. Infact, it wouldn't be a bad idea to place two signs at the bottom of the stairs that should say ' Your heart needs exercise, use the stairs, while the other should read, ' Improve your waistline, use the stairs.

Need we say more? Hold on! Research suggests that the simple act of walking up and down just two flights of stairs each day produces an average annual weight loss of about 2.7 kg in the average 80 kg man. So how about taking the stairs instead of the elevator to your workplace today?

Dancing: Dance, Baby, dance! Explore different cultures and rhythms such as Kathak, Bharat Natyam, Odissi, Kuchipuri, Manipuri, or Ballet and yes, disco too, if you're not classically inclined. The steps, patterns and music keep your mind busy while you work your heart, burn calories and tone your muscles. Before you know it, you're drenched with sweat and feel exhilarated. Moreover, dancing builds balance coordination and style in you. And what better way to meet people.

However, just watch your step! It's easy to get tangled in the footwork or overload your circuits if you're not a natural or you try too much too soon.

Jogging/Running: This versatile workout can be adapted to reflect your goals- to win a race, to reduce weight or to say goodbye to stress and strain. All you need is a decent pair of shoes and a stretch of road to run on.

What's more, it can be done anytime and under any condition. If you don't feel like running, you can stay right at your home and can job instead. It's a good way to be alone when you're in a contemplative mood.

However, take care! Pounding on the road over long periods of time can leave you susceptible to overuse injuries. Also, doing too much, too fast opens you up to injuries like shin splints.

Karate: Want to become mentally agile and physically fit? Want to improve your hand-eye coordination and balance. Well, try out blocks, kicks, and punches! Wondering what we are talking about. Karate! The upside of karate is that besides all the above-mentioned benefits it also prepares for almost any kind of attack that you could possibly imagine. It also helps build up confidence, flexibility and improves your flexes.

However, we advise you to leave martial arts to the classroom. Before you start a fight, make sure you understand the consequences of what you're prepared to do. And most importantly, never hit first.

In the end, we'll just say, go ahead; choose your type of exercise! Whether it's gardening, dancing, jogging or stair climbing, the idea is to get fit and stay fit!
